It's even been claimed that this ending is a predecessor to the stupid and contrived endings we see in modern films. This ending is very controversial as it turns out, and some people claim it undermines the film.
The rest of the movie is ten minutes of our protagonist eating a fancy dinner with the watchman that helped him, and happily giving out money to smiling washroom attendants, doormen, hobos, and total strangers. The turn of events is explained entirely by newspaper articles in a montage where people read them with mouths agape. This lucky fellow turns out to be our protagonist, and it happens entirely off screen.
The new ending, to to make a long story short, explains that a millionaire had written in his will that whomever's arms he dies in will inherit his entire fortune. He also makes note of the fact that real life would probably keep the dreary ending. It's Murnau basically saying that this story is too sad for him, and that he wants to write happy ending for this character he pities so much (what actually happened is that the story was too sad for the writer, Mayer, and the studios, so he changed it, but that's irrelevant). It's not used to explain a story or spell out dialogue. He sleeps in his bathroom in shame, and the last shot seems like it might be of the main character sitting alone on a chair in a bathroom, shrouded in a coat given to him by a friendly night watchman.īut then Murnau puts in the first and only title card in the film. He tries to hide this from his family and friends, but is found out. He goes from a happy man who stands of straight and dominates the room with his personality to a shrunken and pathetic figure. TL DR: A cheery doorman- who loves his job and his family, who makes everyone he knows so proud, who wants nothing more to be a good doorman to a wave of incoming smiling faces- gets demoted to the role of bathroom attendant for his increasing age. I want to skip to the ending, so here is a quick tl dr of everything about the film up to that point: Also notable is his complete lack of title cards used in the story telling. The imagery of the film is incredible, with quick and swooping camera movements (such as the incredibly fast pan down a hallway to see a group of guards asleep at their post, or a shot that moves from the inside of a musician's horn in a courtyard up to the main character's perspective many floors up), moody lighting, and incredible visual effects. Murnau who is, in my opinion, the most extraordinary of all the silent film directors. On 25 December 2017, the two parties announced through the studio that they had parted amicably in October 2017.I've just watched The Last Laugh, a film by F.W.
